Good Afternoon –

As we have seen and heard across all of the news outlets, the Swine Flu is spreading throughout parts of the US.  I thought it would be prudent to keep you informed as to what you can do and how we can help you within your workplace to minimize the potential effect of this virus.

The Department of Health and Human Services has declared a public health emergency in the United States in response to the rise in the number of confirmed cases reported of Swine Influenza (H1N1).

Guidance published for infection control recommends keeping "surfaces (especially tables, surfaces in the bathroom, and toys for children) clean by wiping them down with a disinfectant according to directions on the product label."  Disinfect all contact surfaces with a quaternary disinfectant.  (An EPA neutral quat will kill the A1N1 Swine Influenza virus.)  Additional tips:

  1. Always use disposable gloves when cleaning

  2. Use fresh properly diluted quaternary disinfectant and change solution frequently

  3. Because of cross contamination concerns, always use new or clean wiping cloths or mops when cleaning surfaces

  4. Don't forget light switches, phones, doorknobs, handrails and faucets.  Anything that can be done to do to help minimize the spread of germs that may cause illness makes good sense.  Handwashing and hand sanitizing are especially critical to minimize the spread of germs during times of illness outbreak.  In the meantime, facilities should ensure the availability of materials for adhering to Respiratory Hygiene/Cough Etiquette. Tissues and conveniently located dispensers of alcohol-based hand sanitizers are recommended.
